Russian President Vladimir Putin was spotted riding a tiny tank in New York’s Central Park this week and was quickly swarmed by children – or at least a statue of him was.
The Putin sculpture was created by French artist James Colomina and placed in a playground inside Manhattan Park, according to the artist. instagram.
The bright red sculpture shows the Russian leader sitting atop a miniature military tank in an almost childlike squat.
“This sculpture aims to denounce the absurdity of war and to highlight the courage of children in the face of violent and catastrophic situations triggered by others”, Colomina wrote accompanied by photos of his work.
Photos of the sculpture in New York showed children quickly hugging their new playmate by covering him in sand and pointing their water guns at him.
The Manhattan facility comes nearly six months after Russia launched an unprovoked invasion of Ukraine and fighting continues, particularly in the east of the country.
It’s unclear if the carvings came to the attention of Putin, who goes to great lengths to create a public perception of himself as strong and manly: The Russian leader famous photo shoots introduced him shirtless on horseback and posing majestically outdoors.
