Well-placed music decides the tone of a TV show. With the right songs, a show can make a lasting impression on its viewers, but pick the wrong ones, and someone might not make it past the first episode. No one knows that better than Jen Malone, the music supervisor of hit shows like Euphoria, yellow jacketsand now, Wednesday.
In case you missed any of the exciting new shows on Netflix right now, Wednesday follows Wednesday Addams. Yes, this Wednesday Addams while attending Nevermore, a boarding school for teens with supernatural powers. Wednesday soon finds herself embroiled in multiple mysteries and murders, and must save herself and her friends before it’s too late. For such a dark and gloomy show, a strong soundtrack sets the tone.
Season 2 of Euphoria, for example, contained a solid mix of both new and old songs, spanning multiple genres including rock, pop, and classical. Plus, original music by artist Labrinth, a longtime collaborator on the show. Euphoria is packed with dramatic moments and surreal scenes, so it makes sense to cover a wide range on the musical spectrum.
Wednesday, on the other hand, has a very specific vibe. The show (and its eponymous character) is about those who don’t conform to what “normal” is, so choosing the latest pop songs and more traditional tunes may not always be what the show is aiming for. And that includes an unexpected (but well-placed) choice for the popular dance sequence from the show. But considering Wednesday success, it’s clear that the people working behind the show knew exactly what music would suit the dark college environment. Here is the official soundtrack of Wednesday.
