Tarboro, N.C. — An Edgecombe County deputy was involved in a fatal shooting and stabbing at a home on Thursday afternoon, authorities said.
Sheriff Cleveland Atkinson said the deputy was stabbed with a pocket knife at a home in the 4300 block of McNair Road.
Atkinson told WRAL the suspect, a man, had the knife in his possession and was chasing a woman, prompting an emergency call around 2 p.m. The situation escalated when deputies arrived and the man charged at them. The man was able to stab the deputy in the back before another responding deputy shot him.
The deputy was taken to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, where he was later released.
Sky 5 video showed authorities surrounding the single-story home, which was surrounded by crime scene tape. McNair Road was shut down into the evening.
No other details were immediately available. The sheriff will give an update Friday at 11 a.m. in a press conference.
“I feel bad for all of them,” said Gay Lucas, a neighbor. “Just afraid for the deputy and his family and the suspect’s family.”
The State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to investigate the incident, which is standard protocol for an officer or deputy-involved shooting.
