Suspect dies in Edgecombe Co. deputy-involved shooting :: WRAL.com

— An Edgecombe County deputy was involved in a fatal shooting and stabbing at a home on Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

Sheriff Cleveland Atkinson said the deputy was was stabbed with an unknown weapon at a home in the 4300 block of McNair Road.

Atkinson told WRAL the suspect, a man, was trying to hurt a family member, prompting an emergency call. The situation escalated when deputies arrived. The man was able to stab the deputy in the back before another responding deputy shot him.

The deputy was taken to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville. The deputy’s condition was described as stable.

Sky 5 video showed authorities surrounding the single-story home, which was surrounded by crime scene tape.

No other details were immediately available.

The State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to investigate the incident, which is standard protocol for an officer or deputy-involved shooting.
