COVENTRY CITY’s clash with Rotherham on Sunday has been called off due to concerns over the pitch.
It comes after the Commonwealth Games rugby 7s matches were played at the Ricoh Arena.
Now, after an inspection of the pitch this afternoon, match officials have ruled the surface unplayable for tomorrow’s league game.
A Sky Blues statement read: “Coventry City are extremely disappointed to confirm that Sunday’s game against Rotherham United has been postponed.
“Following an inspection by a senior match official on Saturday, the pitch at the Coventry Building Society Arena was deemed unsafe and unplayable.
“This follows an inspection which took place on Friday by the EFL and a local referee, which was also attended by manager Mark Robins and chief executive Dave Boddy.
“We are very frustrated that the Arena pitch is not up to standard, and share the huge disappointment that the fans, players and staff will feel that our home opener has been postponed in these circumstances.
“The Arena’s promised investment in new ground unfortunately did not materialize over the summer, which was compounded by concerts on the ground and then huge use at the Commonwealth Games over the weekend. end last.
“We appreciate the efforts made in difficult circumstances by the field staff who work for the Arena.”
Coventry City chief executive Dave Boddy added: “We are extremely disappointed with this postponement due to the state of the pitch.

“He was deemed unplayable and dangerous by the official inspector and, having seen him myself, I can understand that decision.
“Last season the condition of the pitch was highlighted as a concern and we expected this to be resolved by Wasps and Arena, who are responsible for the pitch, over the summer – unfortunately , it didn’t, and that’s the result of that, plus the sheer amount of usage at the Commonwealth Games last week.
“I seek urgent discussions with Wasps General Manager Stephen Vaughan and the Arena on the condition of the pitch, and expect immediate and meaningful improvements to make the pitch playable as soon as possible.”
Coventry have confirmed that all tickets purchased for the game will be eligible for the rearranged tie against Rotherham United as they have also pledged to keep fans informed of Wednesday’s Carabao Cup clash against Bristol City.
