Greyson’s Luck talks about his experience with the former mentor Ellen Degeneres.
As viewers may recall, the singer became an overnight sensation in 2010 when a video of his performance of Lady Gagait is Paparazzi went viral online. The clip quickly caught the attention of Ellen, who invited the 12-year-old to The Ellen DeGeneres Showlater signed him eleven elevenand put him in contact with managers Troy Carter and Guy Osarya booking agent WME, AND publicists. While many people would have assumed this would be a dream come true for a young artist like Greyson, it actually turned out to be a nightmare for him.
In a new interview with rolling stone Posted on Thursday, the 25-year-old opened up about his relationship with Ellen for the first time, saying she had been an “incredibly manipulative” person behind the scenes for most of her career. Greyson told the outlet:
“I have never met anyone more manipulative, more self-centered and more obviously opportunistic than her.”
The musician claims that once Ellen took control of her career, she became almost like a “hidden eye” and often “became overbearing and way too controlling” about everything from her image to giving up on entire performances when she did not approve:
“She would walk in and look at a rack, yell at stylists, berate people in front of me, and say, ‘That’s what you wear on the show. She was just demeaning to people.
On one occasion, Greyson recalled Ellen requesting an advanced copy of justin bieber2011 documentary Never say never for him to watch. But since he was exhausted from his long days of work, he didn’t have the energy to see him at that time. Needless to say, she apparently felt slighted by this. He alleges that the daytime talk show host even went so far as to call his mother to berate her on the phone:
“I will never forget that. I just remember hearing the other side of the phone, just screaming [and] rebuke: ‘What kind of mother are you? Do you realize that I’ve done everything I can to get it for you and he can’t sit down and watch it?
According to him, things quickly continued to go downhill from there. When his 2012 album The truth must be told, part 1 tanked, Greyson says Ellen grew distant and “completely ditched” him – leading his label and team brought together by the 64-year-old to drop him as well. While he was still invited to appear on The Ellen DeGeneres show during this time, her experience made her feel like her presence was wanted by Ellen:
“I couldn’t reach her. Impossible to talk to him. Every time I came on the show, it was a fake smile. She wouldn’t even ask, ‘How are you? How are you holding up?’ It was just like, ‘This is what we’re going to talk about. We’ll see you there.
Greyson eventually retired from music before returning once again in 2019 to release his album Portraits. With the success of the record, he also returned to Ellen’s show to play, but their interactions apparently remained awkward. Greyson said rolling stone it puzzled him how calm she had been despite their past, and he apparently didn’t buy the praise she gave him for coming out. Perceiving the moment as “cheap”, he said:
“She came out during soundcheck and she looked at me, hugged me” … “And she said, ‘How are you?’ And it just killed me inside because I was like, ‘What do you mean, how the fuck have I been? Where were you?”
As she may have been trying to move on and mend past flaws, he felt something different:
“[When I came out,] I haven’t spoken to her in years… It’s so messed up, that you’re now showing the world like we’re so close. We are so good. And behind the scenes, you’re this incredibly manipulative person.
After this appearance, Greyson vowed never to return to the show. And when they then reached out to have him come as a guest during his final two weeks in March, he turned it down in order to protect his own “integrity”.
As for how her mother feels? Lisa told the magazine:
“I think Ellen is a businesswoman. And if something doesn’t go her way, she’s going to call it quits because it’s her business. It’s not hot and fuzzy. I don’t don’t think she invited people into her life or took anyone under her wing like she did if she didn’t want to see something come out of it. fast enough for her, that’s when she started shutting down or excluding us.
Ellen has yet to respond to the allegations, but a source close to the talk show crew said People she “went above and beyond to help him succeed, but in the business that doesn’t always work out, and his career hasn’t taken off.”
Of course, this is just the latest complaint against Ellen after she was accused of creating a toxic work environment on the show… not to mention what was revealed Anne Hecheit is feelings about their relationship…
