Shaquille O’Neal (Shaq) is a well-known businessman, and his latest decision may well prevent his son from following in his footsteps… at least for now.

The group of authentic brands of Shaquille O’Neal prevented his 19-year-old son Chaqirbasketball player for University of Southern Texas Tigers, to register its name and image as a trademark. The reason for the move? Their names are too similar and could lead to confusion.

According to the opinion,

“Applicant’s mark is the same or a close approximation to the Shaq marks and Applicant’s mark is confusingly similar to the opponent’s Shaq marks in sight, sound and commercial impression.”

He adds,

“The Shaq marks are famous, and they were so long before the plaintiff filed the opposing applications, which were filed on an intent-to-use basis.”

The National Collegiate Athletic Association decided in 2021 that college athletes could be paid for their name, image and likeness. At the time, NCAA President Marc Emmert said,

“Today is an important day for college athletes as they can all now take advantage of name, image and likeness opportunities. With the variety of state laws passed across the country, we will continue to work with Congress to develop a solution that will bring clarity at the national level.

In case the Shaqthe filing was to come into force, Chaqir would have to cancel its application if the filing were to come into effect.

The O’Neals have been rumored to disagree, but the attorney Josh Gerben said the block is the result of an earlier dispute between the management firms.

Shaunie O’Neal

Chaqir is the younger son of Shaq and his ex-wife Shaunie O’Neal. The former lovebirds are also the biological parents of shareef22, Amira20 and Me’Arah15. Shaq also has a daughter, Taahirahfrom a previous relationship, and adopted Shaunieson of, Myles20 years old, like his.
