The hotel manager told police that around 10 a.m. he heard a woman screaming from inside a hotel room, with other neighbors confirming they had also heard screams before to ring 911.

When they arrived at the scene, the police found a dead two-month-old baby in a room.

According to the hotel manager, five people had been living in the hotel room for a month and a half – including several children.

Mom Darla Luke was charged with criminal child neglect, and her other children – who lived in the hotel room – were placed with a grandmother by the Department of Social Services, according to local press.

The tragic incident came after Luke was also charged with misdemeanor child abuse on June 7 for another incident.

“Between June 7 and June 21, the Mississippi The Department of Child Protective Services has returned the children to their custody,” Amanda Jones, a spokeswoman for the city of Clinton, said in a statement.

The Hinds County coroner said he believed the baby may have died of asphyxiation, possibly as a result of co-sleep.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.

Police have yet to release further details about the case, which is still under investigation.
