“It’s my ego, unchecked.”
Over the years, Tom has had a pretty good track record of surprising fans on their big day, appearing unexpectedly in wedding photos around the world.
And when asked how and why he does it, Tom must have joked about the whole thing.
“It’s my ego, unchecked. I can’t help thinking, ‘What would these people want more than anything else to remember this magical day? Oh, I know, me!’ “, said Tom on Late Night with Seth Meyers.
Turns out Tom’s marriage obsession started when he was in Rome filming Angels. The day he was to shoot at the Pantheon, a couple had also reserved the place for their wedding.
When the limo arrived, Tom began to feel bad about the situation, considering that trucks and a film crew had taken over the old monument.
“It was like, ‘Um, how can we fix this?’ So, like a stalker… I knocked on the [limo] the window; I said, ‘Hey, look, we have something, but would you do me the honor of escorting you to your nuptial altar?’ So we did it!” Tom shared.
He noted that he felt the situation was more about him “providing a service” rather than crushing a marriage – but it inspired him to keep doing it.
From there, Tom has photobombed more wedding photos than he can count – and even officiated one or two!
And while forced marriages aren’t socially acceptable, it seems these couples all made an exception for Tom!
