Wednesday, Metathe parent company of Facebook and instagramannounced that the former president donald trumpAccounts on social media platforms would soon be restored.
Trump was indefinitely suspended from the platforms more than two years ago for inflammatory posts during the Jan. 6 riot on Capitol Hill.
“Our determination is that the risk [to public safety] has backed off enough,” Meta President of Global Affairs Nick Clegg said in a blog post. “As such, we will be restoring Mr. Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts in the coming weeks. However, we do so with new guardrails in place to deter repeat offences.
Still, according to Clegg, Trump would face “heavier penalties for repeat offenses,” and if he violates Meta’s community guidelines again, the offending posts will be deleted and he will be suspended for between one month and two years.
The decision follows the restoration of Trump’s Twitter account after Elon Musk’s takeover. Although Trump has yet to tweet, opting instead to stay on his own social media platform, Truth Social, he is likely to return to Facebook and Instagram.
Earlier this month, Trump’s campaign sent a letter to Meta asking the company to unblock his Facebook.
“We believe the banning of President Trump’s Facebook account has significantly distorted and inhibited public discourse,” Trump’s campaign wrote in its Jan. 17 letter to Meta, according to a copy of the letter reviewed by NBC News.
