What is the holiday in the church calendar today and to whom do believers pray – read in the TSN.ua material.
Today, January 26, in the Orthodox calendar — the day of memory of Saints Yermil and Stratonicus. They lived at the beginning of the IV century during the reign of Emperor Licinius, who was known for his persecution of Christians. He announced that he would give a reward to anyone who pointed him to a Christian. This is how Yermil, who was a deacon, was captured. Licinius first suggested that he serve the pagan gods. But he refused.
Yermil was then put in prison for 3 days. Then they let him go to voice his proposal again. Yermil again disagreed. Then he was severely tortured. Stratonik worked in this dungeon, was a friend of Yermil and a secret Christian. Seeing the torment of the deacon, he wept bitterly, as he betrayed himself. The emperor found out that they were friends and ordered them both to be drowned in the river.
In honor of St. Yermil, a national holiday is celebrated on January 26 — Yermil’s day.
