SALT LAKE CITY — A 57-year-old Salt Lake County man was taken into custody Thursday by for allegedly physically abusing his grandson, Unified Police say.
According to the probable cause statement, Rukundo Banangamambo was having an argument with his daughter, who is the victim’s mother. During the argument, Banangamambo had a strong smell of alcohol coming from him.
The argument was over the TV, according to the probable cause statement.
Even though the argument was non-criminal, family members were able to separate the suspect from his daughter.
The probable cause statement also stated as the two were arguing, the 2-year-old victim came walking into the room. Banangamambo was angry and picked up the child and threw him onto a couch where the child lost consciousness.
When authorities arrived on scene, the child was breathing and appeared to be asleep. When emergency personnel attempted to wake him up, he quickly went back to sleep. Several young teenage children were in the home at the time and witnessed the incident.
The victim was taken to the hospital for further examination.
Banangamambo was arrested for investigation of child abuse, a third-degree felony; commission of domestic violence in the presence of a child, a second-degree misdemeanor and intoxication, third-degree misdemeanor.
The suspect was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail.
