LEWISBURG (WVDN) — The second-ranked Shady Spring Tigers came to Fairlea on a mission on Tuesday night, February 8, when they defeated the Greenbrier East Spartans 71-59 in front of a large, hostile crowd at Spartan Gym.
The Tigers, who beat East by two points at Shady Spring just two weeks ago, used timely shooting, offensive rebounding and scrappy defense to stymie the Spartans attack and get the win.
Shady (13-1) started the game on an 11-0 run on two 3-pointers from Braden Chapman, a basket by Lamar Maxwell, and another three by Braden’s brother, Cole Chapman. Jude Libby finally got the Spartans on the board and stopped the run with a corner three, but the Tigers kept biting.
East (8-9) had trouble containing Jaden Holstein underneath. He gobbled up offensive rebounds and scored at will in the paint. A pull-up three from Adam Seams and then a short jumper from Seams again made the score 15-10, Shady, with 1:30 to go in the first quarter, but the Tigers always answered. However, Monquelle Davis banked in a trey at the first quarter buzzer and the Spartans trailed 20-13 after one. A three-point play from Aaron Griffith brought the Spartans to within six points at 22-16, but Shady went on a quick 8-0 run to go up by 12 points. That is when Goose Gabbert went on a personal 8-0 run to bring East back to 30-24 with 2:16 left in the half. But as they seemingly did every time down the floor, the Tigers answered and led 33-24 at halftime.
The third quarter belonged to Spartan guard Bryson Brammer who hit four 3-pointers and kept the Spartans within striking distance. They cut the deficit to 44-40 late in the third, but that would be as close as they would get the rest of the night. Cameron Manns hit some big shots for the Tigers, the Chapman brothers scored key baskets and Holstein continued to deliver under the bucket and Shady celebrated their road victory. Seams led East with 16 points. Brammer finished with 12.
Cole Chapman had 15 points to lead the Tigers. Holstein had 14 and Braden Chapman added 12. Manns also hit double figures with 10.
